New Orleans center Jonas Valanciunas has somewhat kept the Kings’ offensive centerpiece in check in their various interactions. Exchanging pleasantries five times in the regular season, Sabonis failed to reach 23 combined assists and rebounds four times. And the one game he did — a 127-117 Pelicans win in Sacramento on Dec. 4 — Sabonis barely eclipsed the needed total with 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
New Orleans takes pride in its defensive performance. During the regular season, the Pelicans ranked No. 6 in adjusted defensive efficiency. In their last 15 regular-season contests, they landed inside the league’s top 13 in fewest rebounds and assists allowed per game.
